the wheel has its origins in prehistory, specifically

in the Neolithic, and the oldest known was built
about five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia.
Logically, it is not known who made the first, but
there is evidence that at first was wooden and was
used in the potter's wheel to make pottery.
Gradually  was perfected and brought new and
  revolutionary inventions, such as animal-drawn
carts to transport people and goods, or perform
agricultural tasks. Its use spread to the pulleys,
mills, spinning wheels, waterwheels ...
contributing to the development of society to this day.
